Students Won the First Prize in the 2023 UIA-HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design

The final results of the "2023 UIA-HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design " were announced on November 5, with the team from College of Architecture and Art, HFUT, consisting of Zhu Yuqi, Zhang Jingyue, and Hou Zhaopeng, achieving an outstanding first prize for their work titled"The Daily Routine of Light".

The competition theme, "Architecture in Transformation," focused on designing for psychological well-being amid the urban sprawl in high-density cities. The team chose the "Sunshine City" community in Puning City, Guangdong Province, as their project site. Addressing the challenges posed by high-density urban living, the team aimed to enhance residents' psychological well-being without resorting to massive reconstruction. Their design prioritized "psychological health" ,bringing people back to the sensory experience of real life while considering rational indicators and humanistic elements."The Daily Routine of Light"stood out among 32 entries, securing the sole first prize in the competition. Another team (Wu Qi, Ye Kecheng, Li Junlong, Zhou Gaocheng) received an honorable mention.

The "UIA-HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design" started in 2012, providing a platform for international architecture students to showcase their talents. This annual competition, now in its 11thyear, deviates from the traditional progressive approach to architectural education, encouraging students to think differently and enhance their problem-solving skills. It has become a catalyst for discovering architectural talents. The competition is renowned as one of the most influential international architectural design competitions, showcasing high-level design standards in the winning entries.

UIA-HYP CUP 2023 was hosted by Union International des Architectes (UIA), with Tianjin University's School of Architecture, "Urban Environment Design" (UED) magazine, and Nanjing University's School of Architecture and Urban Planning as joint organizers. The jury was chaired by Ms. Caroline Bos, Honorary Professor at the Melbourne School of Architecture and Planning and Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture. The executive chair was Cui Kai, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and National Master of Engineering Survey and Design. The competition chair was Kong Yuhang, Talents Professor at Tianjin University's School of Architecture. The panel included esteemed educators such as Professor Zhang Tong, Dean of the School of Architecture at Southeast University, Professor Li Xiangning, Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at Tongji University, and Professor Ji Guohua, Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Nanjing University. Approximately 1903 student teams from around the world participated in this competition.

The success of our students in this competition reflects the remarkable achievements in fostering innovative spirit, entrepreneurial awareness, and practical skills, as well as the development of independent learning consciousness and abilities.
